LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — 11 UNLV students studying abroad in China recently returned to Las Vegas out of an “abundance of caution” amid concerns about coronavirus overseas, according to the university.
UNLV says those students are safe and returned in January, and it is working with them on alternative options for their studies this semester.
UNLV offers two study abroad programs in China, one in Shenghai and one in Chengdu. Both of those programs have been halted for the time being.
UNLV’s study abroad program in South Korea has also been canceled for the spring semester. The program had previously been delayed to mid-March, the university says, so it had not begun yet.
No other locations have been impacted, including Italy and Japan where there are reports that the virus has spread. UNLV says it is in close contact with all of its students abroad as well as the central office of the University Study Abroad Consortium.
A representative from UNLV tells 13 Action News:
The university continues to monitor all aspects of this issue very closely, which includes review of ongoing recommendations by local health officials, the CDC, and the Department of State.
News about the early returns comes as CNN reportsthat a growing number of colleges across the nation are canceling or rerouting study abroad programs because of the coronavirus.
